According to Benjamin Franklin’s letters, he took the inspiration for two of his parables “from an ancient Jewish tradition.” One of these parables — commonly referred to as the Parable against Persecution, or Abraham and the Stranger — is a story about the biblical patriarch Abraham, told in King James Version-language, which expounds the obligation of religious tolerance.
